Tralee RFC 3

After several postponements, Abbeyfeale finally got to play Tralee in the final in Cullinagh Park Newcastle West on fri 02/05/08. Both teams arrived with full panels to chose from. Tralee had a few new faces from the team we beat comprehensively in the league in January. That said the Abbeyfeale coaches had their players motivated and well prepared for the final. As expected the game started with nerves tingling on both sides. Tralee kicked off, Dean Enright secured the ball and set up a maul. With support from the pack Abbeyfeale drove on for ten metres before Darragh Walsh released the ball to the waiting backline. Tralee’s new centres were up quickly to stop the ball going wide and a knock on from Abbeyfeale gave possession to Tralee. The resulting penalty saw Tralee gain 15 metres before their big centre was finally dragged to the ground. A long kick in behind Tralee from Dan G relieved the pressure on Abbeyfeale and the follow up from the Abbeyfeale backs had Tralee scrambling to clear their lines. Abbeyfeale won the lineout and again a fast delivery out from Darragh had the backs away. Tralee momentarily halted Abbeyfeale before the forwards again arrived, this time Darragh gave to James O Mara who burst down the blindside to go over in the corner with only four pulsating minutes gone. Dan G composed himself over the ball a metre in from the side line to split the posts with a conversion ROG would be proud of. Dean Enright again gathered the kick off cleanly, the forwards kept it tight to drive Tralee back before releasing to the backs where Adrian finally found some space to run at Tralee. But good defence and strong tackles stopped him from gaining too much ground. Again, with support arriving late the ball was turned over. Tralee’s kick in behind Abbeyfeale and the follow through showed they were here for a game. With some scrappy play on the ground Abbeyfeale conceded a penalty which was converted to get Tralee on the scoreboard. Both teams had a number of penalties awarded against them for infringements which slowed the game for a time before Philip Daly latched onto a loose ball on the ground for a great turnover which saw Chris Leahy race away from everyone to score in the corner to lead 12 pts to 3 at the half. With plenty of water taken on and advice from the coaches Abbeyfeale stepped out confidently for the 2nd half. Tralee threw everything they had but it soon became apparent that all ball was going through the big centre. He twice got to within touching distance of the Abbeyfeale line only to be denied by a very determined and resolute Abbeyfeale side who dug as deep as they had to all season to turn the ball over. Again a big relieving kick from Dan G had Tralee scrambling. Shane Murphy was first up to put in the tackles which saw Tralee go further back, aided by Chris and Jonathon, Tralee found themselves defending their own line. Initial pressure was got with a good kick, only to see Abbeyfeale fullback John Murphy weave his way past four Tralee players before going to ground. With the game clock now running low, Abbeyfeale continued to exert the pressure, Philip Daly putting in three big tackles driving Tralee backwards with each one. Abbeyfeale had a good claim for another try denied when Shane apparently went into to touch. With three minutes of injury time played the final whistle blew to the delight of Abbeyfeale who had just completed the double for an incredible season. James O’Mara accepted the Cup on behalf of the panel. In his acceptance speech he thanked Tralee for a hard sporting game. He thanked the coaches, all the players and those who have supported us all season. He also thanked the ref. and NCW RFC for their facilities. Head coach JD Harnett echoed these sentiments and also paid tribute to a fine bunch of players who we as coaches have had the pleasure of working with for the last two seasons. Many thanks from JD, Rick, Tom, Dermot & Aidan.

Charleville RFCÂ 12

Sunday 16th Abbeyfeale travelled the short distance to NCW to play Charleville in the league final. Opening exchanges saw a very tight game ahead as is normal with encounters with Charleville. With 6 minutes gone Charleville turned over Abbeyfeale on there own 22, the ball was moved wide and the Charleville captain broke through three tackles to go over for the opening score in the corner. Abbeyfeale attacked from the restart and had Charleville on the back foot only to be penalised for not releasing in the tackle. Charleville took the opportunity to clear there lines but the ball was kept in play by John Murphy, who evaded three tackles before setting up a maul, Abbeyfeale again had Charleville on the back foot, Shane Murphy punched through the Charleville defence to release Stephen who set up the on running Adrian and with his speed and two hand offs went over for Abbeyfeale’s opening score, Dan G converted. Abbeyfeale continued to apply the pressure, scrummaging was probably the best we have seen this season, Jake always had time at the back of the scrum before releasing the back line or going himself. With the 1st half nearing an end, Abbeyfeale kicked the ball in behind the Charleville defence, with Charleville scrambling back to recover Abbeyfeale arrived in numbers to bundle player and ball into touch. A rehearsed lineout from training was put to the test which resulted in Dan G crossing the line for a great try which he also converted before the half time whistle. The 2nd half was much of the same, great tackles from both sides before Charleville scored 10mins into the half which was converted. Abbeyfeale continued to press but were denied a try by Adrian in the corner, the referee deemed he touched the corner flag before grounding the ball. The fact that the touch judge with his hands raised high in celebration for what he believed to be a good try may have influenced the refs decision. Abbeyfeale continued to press for another score but the final whistle sounded to spark great celebrations from the players, coaches and the huge travelling support. James O Mara accepted the plaque on behalf of the team, thanked the Abbeyfeale coaching staff and Charleville for a great game of rugby. The team would also like to thank T J Riordan for the food and refreshments provided when we returned home.

Killorglin RFCÂ Â 05

Played Killorglin Sunday Morning at the Grove in the league semi final. A Full panel of 24 players were available. Dan G got the game underway with a high kick which was gathered well by the Killorglin No 8. He broke the first tackle before been held up by James and Shane. Killorglin made some ground when they moved the ball wide but a big tackle by Stephen knocked the ball free. Levi scrambled and recovered the loose ball and it was taken on by Jake who made 10 meters before being brought down. Darragh now let the ball out to the back line but a forward pass gave possession back to Killorglin. A number of handling errors on both sides crept into the game, Abbeyfeale failed to clear out in the rucks and Killorglin were penalised on several occasion for off side. 15 minutes into the game Abbeyfeale got the opening score when Adrian ran at speed onto a pass from Dan G to cut through the Killorglin defence to go in under the posts. Dan G converted. Abbeyfeale were still slow at clearing out in the rucks and a good turn over saw Killorglin get on the score sheet with a fine try. The game became more physical and we lost John Murphy through a clash of heads, Jack Breen stepped in at full back. Jake temporarily was side lined with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Dean. No further score in the first half which remained very tight. The 2nd half saw Abbeyfeale raise there game and straight from the kick off saw Shane gather and with a strong run down the wing he held off the challenge of the Killorglin winger, Dan G again converted from a difficult angle. Abbeyfeale now upped the tempo and scored almost immediately from the kick off to see Adrian with another big burst through the middle to go over in the corner. Abbeyfeale controlled the game from the restart and took the ball within 15 meters of the line through a great maul by the forwards, this platform set up the backs and again Stephen broke through the line before releasing Adrian who passed outside to Jamie to go over for Abbeyfeale’s 4th try. Abbeyfeale continued to dominate and some great passages of play led to good try’s from Jake and Adrian, Dan G converting the last on the stroke of full time. Well done to all the panel.

Abbeyfeale played Castleisland at the Grove on Sunday 17th. We had a smaller panel than usual due a lot of the players away on hols for the mid tern break. However, those who were present were eager to show what they could do. From the start Abbeyfeale were dominant and only through over eagerness on the own behalf mistakes were made which were duly penalised by the ref. Abbeyfeale led by 4 trys to 2 at the half. A little more focus on doing the basic right yielded a better second half performance where we scored another 4 trys to the visitors one. The Castleisland team must be commended as they kept there heads up and continued to attack at every opportunity right to the end. In the end the experience of the Abbeyfeale side showed. Well done to all who played there part on the day.

Try Scores by : Gavin Dillon ( 3 ), Jamie O Brien ( 3 ), Cathal Broderick ( 2 )

Panel: Cillian Quirke, Philip Daly ( capt ), Liam O Connor, Patrick Murphy, Ronan Keane, Levi Ryan, Dan G Harnett, Cathal Broderick, Jamie O Brien, Stephen Reidy, Gavin Dillon, Jeremy O Riordan, Patrick Flaherty

Abbeyfeale 14
Bruff 10

We played Bruff in our opening game. A poor kick off from Abbeyfeale gave initial advantage to Bruff. An early chip in behind the back line had Abbeyfeale scrambling to recover. Bruff won the first line out and used there heavy pack to drive Abbeyfeale back again. Abbeyfeale managed a turnover and Shane made good ground only to be penalised for holding on after the the tackle. A quick tap from Bruff, caught Abbeyfeale again, the ball was moved wide and the winger was able to go over in the corner for the opening score. Dan G got the game restarted with a high kick off which gave Abbeyfeale the oppurtunity to get up quickly and pressurise the Bruff defence. Abbeyfeale’s forwards drove in numbers and Bruff were on the back foot. Good control from the pack, and with the backs lined up Darragh realeased the ball to Dan G, Adrian took the ball at speed and went over under the posts, Dan G converted to leave it 7 to 5 at the half. Abbeyfeale started stronger in the 2nd half moving the ball freely between backs and forwrds. Through sustained pressure Abbeyfeale again broke through and Shane touched for Abbeyfeale’s second. Again Dan G converted. Bruff came back strong using the big 2nd row to make yards to bring Bruff within inches of the line. Abbeyfeale managed to hold up the ball and Bruff were rewarded a 5 metre scrum. Again the pack came up trumps, turning over the ball and  Dan G cleared the lines with along kick down field. With time running out Bruff got another try to see Abbeyfeale victorious.

Abbeyfeale 12
NCWÂ 7

Another very close encounter in this game with very little between the two sides. The opening exchanges were mixed seeing both sides making some basic errors. Out of nothing NCW got the ball to there center who appeared to ghost through Abbeyfeale’s defence unopposed. Again poor tackling was a feature of Abbeyfeale’s game. Some strong words from the side line got Abbeyfeale minds focused again. Cathal was getting the better of the NCW forwards with two turnovers, this was backed up with some great drives from the tireless Shane. The pressure finally counted when the ball came to Adrian who ran from inside his own half to go over for Abbeyfeale’s opening score, Dan G converted to leave it all square at half time. The 2nd half remained a tight game. Abbeyfeale’s control was now much better, Dean controlled the mauls, Darragh kept driving them on and when the time was right released the ball to Keith on the blind side to run the touch line to go over in the corner. Dan just kicked wide of the upright, but time was up and Abbeyfeale kept the winning run going.

Abbeyfeale 41
Barnet 14

Abbeyfeale through injury and tiredness made a number of changes for the last game. Again the tackling was some way lacking and as a result Abbeyfeale were two scores down before they knew it. A good retart from Dan G , saw the forward get up quick and turn over the ball, Darren foley took a fine pass at speed from Adrian and got over the line to get Abbeyfeale under way. From the restart Dean gathered and after good contol the ball came out the line, first to Stephen who sucked in two more players before releasing Adrian to cross the line unopposed. Abbeyfeale went into the half timebehind for the first time on the day. The message at half time was simple, back to basic, do those right and the scores will come. Sure enough, the players focused and ran in 5 try’s and two convertions without conceded another score to run out easy winners. As Abbeyfeale were the only undefeated team on the day, abbeyfeale capt. James O Mara accepted the winners trophy on behalf of the team. All of the panel were also presented with medals. Well done to all the panel on a fine performance through out the day.

Also, many thanks to NCW RFC on a well organised tournament and for the refreshments afterwards.

Training fri nite at 18.30.
Panel: James O Mara, Philip Daly, Shane Murphy, Dean Enright, Jonathon Fitzgearld, Chris Leahy, cathal Broderick, Jake Quirke, Darragh Walsh, Dan G Harnett, Stephen Cahill, Adrian Enright, Keith Harnett, Kevin Mahoney, John Murphy, Liam O Connor, Brian Griffin, Jamie OBrien.

Try Scorers on the day:
Adrian Enright 5, Shane Murphy 2, Jamie O Brien 2, Keith Harnett 1, Darren Foley 1, Dan G 5 cons.

A “disjointed approach” and players out due to injury led to another unfortunate loss for Abbeyfeale Seniors on Sunday.
The side went down 14-5 to Mallow, in sunny conditions at the Cork side’s home ground.
The match started evenly with both sides putting up a strong attack until the fifth minute when Abbeyfeale had the opportunity to put their first three points on the board. A missed penalty attempt by Blake Charteris kept the score at nil a piece and then the home side started to up their attack.
Abbeyfeales front row including Declan Woulfe, Ian McMahon, Liam Herlihy, Adrian O’Helloran and Mike Murphy worked hard to keep their opponents out with strong scrumaging and defence in front of the try line.
Unfortunately Mallow were awarded a penalty in the 17th minute and a successful kick at goal took their lead to 3-0.
Another penalty six minutes later took their lead to 6-0.
Abbeyfeale worked hard to bring the game back down the field and separate breaks from Conor Prendiville and Mike O’Donnell unfortunately couldn’t be converted into tries.
Abbeyfeale kept up their attack but Mallow’s defence was strong and the match went into halftime 6-0.
Mallow came back confident in the second half and looked to score a try in the opening minutes, but it was persistence from Abbeyfeale that saw them score the first try.
Together they drove towards the line and while Brian Murphy got close, it was Herlihy who dove over in the 47th minute.
A missed conversion kept the score at 6-5 and then Mallow started to move the game back down their end.
Abbeyfeale worked hard to get out of Mallow’s 22, but their opponents were hungry for a try. Woulfe kept up his strong defence in the front row but then Mallow were awarded a penalty in the 62nd minute.
A successful attempt took their lead to 9-5.
Abbeyfeale tried desperately to take control of the game but Mallow appeared more settled. The match went back and forth until Mallow finally got their first try with only five minutes left in the game.
A missed conversion kept the score at 14-5 but Mallow had already sealed their victory.
Abbeyfeale coach Jim Galvin said it was a disappointing result.
“We just didn’t take our chances and were a small bit disjointed throughout the match,” he said.
“We also had a few lads out due to injury but the new players we had today such as Mike Enright and Daniel Ward played really well for us.”
UL Bohs 10

The opening exchanges in this first game were very scrappy on both sides. A lot of missed tackles and poor passing let to some frayed tensions on both sides. A strong drive by the Abbeyfeale forwards finally saw Patrick Murphy power his way over the line for the first of two try’s scored on the day. Not to be out done the backs moved the ball quickly and again Abbeyfeale were put a lot of pressure on UL. The ball finally going to the hands of Jamie O Brien to see his speed and strength take him over the line for Abbeyfeales second try. Half time saw a number of changes introduced but it was UL who off to the better start with a great try run from deep inside there own half. Abbeyfeale picked up the pace which saw two more try’s through Philip and Patrick. Ul got a consolation in the last play of the game.

Abbeyfeale 0
Shannon 20.

The old cliche, a game of two halves, Abbeyfeale couldn’t get to grips with this strong Shannon side and conceded four try’s in the first half. Shannon moved the ball quickly and had forward power to back it up. A strong half time pep talk saw Abbeyfeale emerge with fire in there bellies and although, while they failed to breach the Shannon defence, they kept Shannon scoreless for the second half, some pride restored. Some great performances on the day, Cathal Broderick best for Abbeyfeale.
Try scores – Patrick Murphy 2, Philip Daly 1, Jamie O Brien 1.
