Estuary 2 Abbeyfeale 7

Abbeyfeale U9s Rugby season came to a close in glorious sunshine when we played Estuary in Shanagolden on Sunday last.

After a slow start we found ourselves down a try however we settled quickly and fought our way back into the game with a fine score by Conor.

Estuary tipped off and went on the attack, a great tackle from Sam caused the ball to spill free , Jamie gathered and took off beating 4 or 5 would be tacklers to score his first try or the day ,

Another great tackle in midfield won back position and again Jamie was off to score his second. Estuary started the second half with a score of their own but our lads were in a determined mood, Caoimhe was punching holes in the Estuary defense, the ball was moved wide with passes from Sean , Brandon and Andrew all the way out to Cathal who took off and won the race for the corner to score his first. Another great move again saw Cathal show great pace to score. Gavin was next to take the ball into contact and was supported by Conor , David , and Scott , Sam passed the ball and found Conor who made no mistake and scored another fine try . Jamie then capped off a fine display with the final score of the day.

A big thank you to all of our U9s and their parents for the effort put in throughout the season. We look forward to having you all back again after the summer..

The Abbeyfeale RFC U10s went to Rockwell College last Saturday morning for a Blitz and won all their matches. In our first match we played Mallow. We started this match playing an open game passing across the pitch at every opportunity and we were rewarded when Alex broke from the side of a ruck to score our first try. Eliah kept taking on the Mallow defence and got over the line to score after good play by Lockie who put in some great saving tackles and runs and Eoin who played some of his best rugby at the break down securing possession for us. Morgan was playing his best match in an Abbeyfeale jersey and followed up to score a great try. Gearoid put in some super tackles in this match.

Final score Abbeyfeale 4 Tries – Mallow 1 Try

Our next match was against a big Tralee team and our team stepped up to the challenge by putting in a great display of tackling and support play. Eliah and Morgan paved the way for this win by putting in some very strong runs and were rewarded for their efforts by both scoring tries. After a break by Alex scrum half Donnacha who ran a great support line was duly rewarded with a try. We had great performances by Jack who keeps a long Roche tradition alive by being the first in to the ruck, Andrew and his front row partner Michael put some great tackles and runs in this game.

Final Score Abbeyfeale 4 Tries – Tralee 2 Tries

Up next was Fethard and District and this gave us an opportunity to get all of our younger players some good experience. Again we started brightly and Paddy made some excellent runs and created space for John to make a lot of runs up the wing. Caleb was putting in some of the competitions greatest tackles and he was supported by the whole team. Sean put in a man of the match performance with some excellent tackles and passes.

Final Score Abbeyfeale 5 Tries – Fethard and District 2 Try

Abbeyfeale Rugby Ladies Create History.

Abbeyfeale 17-15 Clonmel

Its onwards and upwards for this newly established ladies rugby team as they won the Munster Ladies Development League title in a hard fought battle against Clonmel on Sunday last. In only their second season this team are the first women’s team to win a title in the clubs history. The start didn’t go to plan for the team as they were first to concede on their home pitch in Abbeyfeale. Clonmel failed to convert. Things soon went to plan for Abbeyfeale as Lisa Hartnett went over the line for Abbeyfeales first of the day. Before the half time whistle Clonmel crossed the line for their second of the day failing to convert. First half ended with Abbeyfeale trailing by 5 points. Abbeyfeale started the second half as they did the first with fire and passion. Janet Garvey soon crossed the line for Abbeyfeales second try of the day. Scores were now level. Clomnel scored another again failing to convert. Abbeyfeale fought hard and their reward came as Lorraine Scanlon scored under the post for Abbeyfeales third try of the day which was converted by Brigid Cahill. Abbeyfeale now lead 17-15. The girls batted hard to retain their two point lead and kept clonmel at bay until the final whistle. Celebrations were soon underway as Abbeyfeale were presented their first cup. A great team performance and outstanding individual performances from every girl on the field. Player of the match was Janet Garvey who delivered another exceptional perforamce for this team. The team would like to thank John Moloney and Liam Herlihy for all their help and support during the season, those who supported them and came to the matches.
