Travelled to Limerick on Saturday to play Young Munsters in a return match. The ground was heavy from the recent spell of bad weather but everyone was grateful that for once the rain gear was not needed. Y Munsters started very strong and had Abbeyfeale pinned back on the own 10m line for opening exchanges. A long clearance kick from Adrian gave the forwards a breather for a brief moment at the Munsters full back returned the ball back inside the Abbeyfeale 22. Again Munsters won the line out and the big No 4 broke through several tackles before grounding the ball for the first try which was converted. Abbeyfeale were under pressure from the restart as the ball didn’t go 10m. Y Munsters again got momentum from the scrum and spread the ball wide. Abbeyfeale put tackle after tackle but the pressure continued and the fullback went over for an unconverted try. Abbeyfeale restart was better next time round, forcing Munsters to conceded two penalties for not releasing the ball. Dan G converted to get Abbeyfeale on the scoreboard. Abbeyfeale upped the pace for the second half only to see the hard work undone with Munsters crossing the line for the first score of the 2nd half. Abbeyfeale continued to press and were duly rewarded with a great drive from inside there own half which took them to within 5m of the line before Adrian was finally bungled over the line. Abbeyfeale pressed again and had the measure of Munsters. Abbeyfeale again crossed the line but were denied at the ref was on hand to determine the ball was not grounded. A quick penalty from Munsters saw there full back run the length of the field to go over for there final score. Abbeyfeale rallied again and had crossed the line only for a dubious call from the home touch judge to give a 5m line out to Munsters.Tjis was the final play in an entertaining game. The sunshine bathing The Grove on Sunday may have been warm, but the performance from Abbeyfeale Seniors against Thurles was nothing short of scorching in the second half.
The homeside stormed to a 19-7 victory over the Tipperary team, but only after a slow start that saw them trailing 7-3 at halftime.
In calm spring-like conditions, Thurles took control early, scoring their first and only points for the match in the forth minute.
While spectators took this as an indication of a tough conquest ahead for Abbeyfeale, the side kept their cool and worked hard to maintain even possession.
With strong driving from the forwards and quick moves from the backs, Abbeyfeale gradually encroached on their try line.
The visitors proved difficult to break with their skilful defence but then an error led to the awarding of a penalty to Abbeyfeale in the 18th minute.
Blake Charteris put his sides first three points on the board with a successful kick and then only moments later the team looked set to score with a quick break from Davy Collins on the wing. Unfortunately Thurles were able to tackle him into touch and kick the ball back down within Abbeyfeale’s 22.
Abbeyfeale took possession and the forwards recommenced their driving, slowly making good ground. Unfortunately, Thurles were awarded a penalty 5 minutes before halftime, but a failed attempt at goal kept Abbeyfeale within four points of their score. With only a few minutes to go before the break Thurles started to look dangerous as they got closer and closer to their try line. Abbeyfeale worked as a pack to keep them out but their desperate defence lead to another penalty for Thurles. Again their goal kicker was unable to seal the three points and the visitors went into halftime with only a modest four point lead.
It was certainly a game of two halves as the homeside came back firing and didn’t take their eyes off their try line. Every player had a hand on the ball as they pushed towards their line, while Thurles struggled to contain them. Abbeyfeale looked strong as they inched closer and closer, but it was the powerful Brian Prenderville who broke the oppositions line and dove over for the first try.
A missed conversion kept the score at just 8-7 to Abbeyfeale but then a successful penalty attempt by Charteris just four minutes later increased their lead to 11-7.
This drew cheers and passionate shouts from the sideline as Abbeyfeale supporters began to feel a victory was now within reach.
And “their boys” did not disappoint as they took control of the game and barely gave Thurles a look in.
With still another 15 minutes left Abbeyfeale were hungry to increase their score and this time it was Charteris whose skilful side stepping saw him carry the ball over the line in the right hand corner.
A missed conversion kept their lead at 16-7 but a successful penalty attempt just 3 minutes before fulltime increased this to 19-7.
Thurles gained a second wind and tried desperately in the dying minutes to add to their score, but unfortunately it was too little two late for the travelling side.
Abbeyfeale coach Jim Galvin said it was a long awaited win considering games for the last three weeks had been postponed due to wet weather.
He said his side soaked up the pressure in the first half which allowed them to be so successful in the second.
“I’m pleased that the lads managed to keep within reach of Thurles score as this laid the platform for the second half,” he said.
“They worked well as a pack and once they got the ball back down within Thurles’ 22 they worked together to get those tries.”
The win takes Abbeyfeale through to the next round of the Munster Junior Cup. The sunshine bathing The Grove on Sunday may have been warm, but the performance from Abbeyfeale Seniors against Thurles was nothing short of scorching in the second half.

ABBEYFEALE 40 KILLORGLIN 10
Abbeyfeale hosted Killorglin at a wet and windy grove on Sat 8th Dec.
Both sides deserve great credit for producing an entertaining game considering the conditions in which the match was played.
The Abbey pack played with a confidence and composure that has been their hallmark for the last few weeks, having decided to play against the hill in the opening half P J Reynolds quickly scored the first try and put killorglin on the backfoot, dominant in the scrum and lineout abbey ran in three more tries from Conor kiely, Tommy O Keefe, Patrick Lane, there was a response from killorglin just before the break with their centre going in at the corner.
The second half saw Killorglin re-assert themselves for awhile but our backline stood up to the pressure with some great tackles.
Gritty determination saw a fine try from Adrian Enright and this was quickly followed by another from outhalf Tim Tobin which killed it off as a contest.
Tim converted five of the six tries good kicking considering the wind.
Francis Henessey had to be replaced early in the first half, we wish him a speedy recovery.

Sunday 25/11/07 we travelled to hosts UL Bohs for the 3rd round of matches.
Bruff, Scarriff nad Newport made up the other teams. A panel of 20 players
travelled. Our opening game was against the hosts.
UL Bohs 20
Abbeyfeale 20
This was a very evenly matched game. Abbeyfeale conceded the opening try
through some missed tackles. Abbeyfeale were soon level as the ball was won
by the forwards and the quick hands of Darragh to Levi who evenually found
Jamie out wide went over for Abbeyfeales opening try. Jamie followed up with
another quick try for Abbeyfeale to lead at the half. UL got the first two
trys of the second half through the shear power of there big forwards.
Abbeyfeale however continued to make the big hits led by there capt Philip
Daly who had great support from Paddy Stack and new man Patrick Murphy.
These hits eventually took there toll and the relentless driving from
Abbeyfeale saw the line open up for Jamie and Eamonn to cross the line. UL
scored again to leave the game level.
Abbeyfeale 20
Scarriff 10
This game was more open as both teams had a game under there belts. Great
defensive displays by both sides saw great tackles preventing certain trys.
Abbeyfeale got off the mark first, Eamonn getting his second of the day.
Abbeyfeale forwards were the stronger of the two sides. A turnover ball five
meters out saw Darragh go down the blind side to go over in the
corner.Changes were made at half time as some players were still suffering
from big hits from the first game. Scarriff continued to scrap for every
ball which was rewarded by another try. Abbeyfeale upped the pace, Dan G
turned the ball over in midfield before releasing to Levi who skipped passed
two players to leave Jamie in for another try. Dan G scored Abbeyfeale’s
final try with another big burst through the center.
Abbeyfeale 15
Bruff 10
Abbeyfeale started this one brightly scoring two break away trys from Dan G.
Bruff remained unfazed and started the second half by using there very big
guys to ware down the Abbeyfeale forwards. Tireness and injuries saw
Abbeyfeale making changes. Bruff capitalised on this to level the game with
four minutes remaining. With one final effort Abbeyfeale held up Bruff on
our own line, Patrick Flaherty ripped the ball, Dan G found another step and
made another 5 meters to give Darragh space before releasing Levi who drew
two tackles to see Eamonn finish a great move with a try.
Try Scorers : Jamie O Brien ( 4 ), Eamonn Flaherty ( 3 ), Dan G Harnett ( 3
), Darragh Walsh ( 1).

Under 13 Friendly
Shannon 24
Abbeyfeale 37
Saturday 24th Nov. Abbeyfeale u13 ‘s travelled to Limerick City to play
Shannon RFC u13′s in a friendly. Abbeyfeale won the toss and opted to kick
off, playing uphill against a light breeze. The opening exchanges saw a
number of handling errors as both sides were cautious. 7 minutes into the
game the Shannon fullback kicked long from deep inside his own half.
Abbeyfeale were caught on the back foot and with the Shannon pack arriving
in numbers the ball was turned over to see Shannon score the opening try
which was converted. Abbeyfeale regrouped but it was Shannon against who
went over for another try. Abbeyfeale with a number of players playing out
of position remained focused and with encouragement from the line slowly
drove Shannon back. A kick across field from stand in out half Jake Quirke
saw the back line put pressure on the Shannon defence. Darren Foley with a
great block down, Kevin Mahoney gathered the ball, held his feet until the
forwards arrived, finally before spilling over the touch line for a Shannon
line out. Abbeyfeale won this and forward drives by Shane and Chris saw
Abbeyfeale within five of the line. Shannon held up the first effort but
there was no stopping the second to see Brian Griffin going over for
Abbeyfeale’s opening score. Shannon kicked deep from the restart to
immediately put Abbeyfeale on the back foot and concede an easy try. A
number of positional switches were made before half time to see Jack Breen
move out the wing and Darren went fullback. This gave Abbeyfeale more
balance and width and before the half time whistle Jake Quirke went over for
a try. The second half started brightly for Abbeyfeale. The ball was sent
out the line to see Jamie O Brien going over for a great try. This was
followed up quickly by one from Chris Leahy and Shane Murphy. Both continued
to punch big holes in the Shannon defence. Abbeyfeale pack was now
controlling the game winning all the line outs. A heavy knock to Capt. James
O Mara forced him to leave the field but his boots were admirably filled by
Liam O Connor. As the game wore on, Shannon got their only try of the second
half but this was cancelled out by a great individual try by Chris Leahy to
see it converted by Jake. Well done to all the panel on great team
performance.
Try’s scorers: Chris Leahy ( 2 ), Jake Quirke ( 2 ), Shane Murphy ( 1 ),
